British game show Countdown has word and number puzzles. ITV Studios produces it for Channel 4. Nick Hewer, Rachel Riley, and Susie Dent host. Since its premiere on 2 November 1982, 67 seasons have been shown. Countdown is one of the world's longest-running game shows, along with Des chiffres et des lettres, which has been on French TV since 1965. Countdown was recorded at The Leeds Studios for 27 years, then moved to Granada Studios in 2009 and MediaCityUK in 2013. Richard Whiteley hosted the show for over 20 years until his 2005 death. Then Des Lynam, Des O'Connor, and Jeff Stelling hosted till the end of 2011. Nick Hewer hosts now. Carol Vorderman, the show's co-host, left in December 2008 with O'Connor. Riley took her place. Every show has a famous guest before the first ad break. Two contestants in each episode compete in three disciplines: eleven letters rounds, in which they try to make the longest word from nine randomly chosen letters; three numbers rounds, in which they use arithmetic to reach a random target number from six other numbers; and the conundrum, a buzzer round in which they solve a nine-letter anagram. In series heats, the winner returns until he or she loses or has eight wins. The finest candidates return for the knockout finals. Extraordinary contestants have gotten national media coverage, and the program is widely recognized and ridiculed in British culture.
