Drop the Dead Donkey

The situation comedy known as Drop the Dead Donkey was initially broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom between the years 1990 and 1998. It takes place at the fictitious headquarters of the television news network GlobeLink News. It was recorded quite close to the time of transmission, and it made advantage of current happenings in the news to give the program a better sense of realism. Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin are responsible for its conception. The series featured multiple actors, and it helped launch the careers of Haydn Gwynne, Stephen Tompkinson, and Neil Pearson. The first episode of the series opened with a media tycoon named Sir Roysten Merchant purchasing GlobeLink. This could be a reference to either Robert Maxwell or Rupert Murdoch. In point of fact, Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin point out on their DVDs that the fact that the two individuals shared the same initials was fortuitous for their libel attorneys. The ongoing conflict between the staff of GlobeLink, led by editor George Dent, who are attempting to keep the company's reputation as a serious news organization, and Sir Roysten's right-hand man Gus Hedges, who are attempting to make the show more sensationalist and suppress stories that might harm Sir Roysten's business empire serves as the primary plot point of the series. At the BAFTA Awards in1994, the program was honored with the award for Best Comedy. The show received the award for Best New TV Comedy in1990, Best Channel 4 Comedy in1991, and Best Channel 4 Sitcom in 1994 from the British Comedy Awards.
