Fireball XL5

Fireball XL5 is a science fiction-themed children's television show that follows the missions of the spaceship Fireball XL5, which is commanded by World Space Patrol Colonel Steve Zodiac. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, husband and wife team, produced the show in 1962 for ITC Entertainment through their company APF in association with ATV. Anderson thought a brand of motor oil called Castrol XL had an interesting sound while developing his new show. The name "Fireball XL" was created through a phonetic change, with the "-5" added because the title appeared a little flat without the numeral. The Andersons' Supermarionation was featured in the show, a type of puppetry first introduced in Four Feather Falls and Supercar and later used in their subsequent productions such as Stingray and Captain Scarlet. On 35mm film, 39 half-hour episodes of Fireball XL5 were shot in black and white; all future Anderson series were shot in color. Several Anderson series have aired in syndication in the United States, but Fireball XL5 is the only Anderson series to have aired on a network in the United States. From September 1963 to September 1965, NBC aired the series during its Saturday morning children's block. Due to a number of similarities and settings, Space Patrol, produced by Gerry Anderson's ex business partner and co-founder of AP Films, Arthur Provis, is frequently confused with Fireball XL5.
