Flikken was a popular Flemish and Belgian TV show about a police department in Ghent. The show started in 1999 and ended just recently on April 19, 2009. In the series, a group of six police officers solved both small and large crimes. The show always tried to show police work in a realistic way, but there was always a little bit of personal drama in the background. Only Mark Tijsmans and Ludo Hellinx were on the show for the whole ten years. Flikken was made by the VRT and shown on Belgium's public channel Eén and the Netherlands' TROS. Flikken is really popular in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the last season, up to 1.8 million people watched the show. Every year, the VRT puts on the Flikkendag, a family day where the public can meet the actors of the show. There are many games, shows by real police and other safety organizations, and performances by singers. On April 18, 2009, a special farewell party was held in Ghent, where the actors and crew said goodbye to their fans. Thousands of people had gathered to watch the show on stage.
