Alchemy is the science of converting one thing into another, and Edward and Alphonse Elric are two brothers who have been gifted with it. Alchemy, on the other hand, is based on the Equivalent Exchange hypothesis, which states that in order to create something of equivalent worth, something of equal value must be sacrificed. When their mother passes away, Edward vows to try the unimaginable and conduct Human Alchemy to bring her back to life. He and Alphonse undertake it, believing they have nothing to lose, but something goes horribly wrong. Alphonse loses his body, while Edward loses his leg in the process. Ed saves Al by affixing his spirit to a suit of armor, albeit at the expense of his arm and leg.
