In August of 2100, a "Gate" portal to a parallel universe suddenly appeared in Ginza, Tokyo. The shopping district became a horrific inferno as monsters and armies surged out of the portal. The Japan Ground-Self Defense Force repelled the fantasy monsters back to the "Gate" promptly. The JGSDF despatched the Third Reconnaissance Team to the "Special Region" on the opposite side of the Gate in order to smooth negotiations and prepare for future battles. Youji Itami, a 33-year-old JSDF officer and otaku, was designated as the Team's leader. The team toured a number of locations and learned a great deal about the local culture and landscape while under attack by enemy forces. Thanks to their efforts in humanitarian aid, they were eventually able to reach out to the locals, despite initial challenges. Even a cute elf, a sorceress, and a demigoddess were among their new circle of acquaintances. On the other hand, the great powers located outside the Gate, such as the United States, China, and Russia, were keenly interested in the Special Region's plentiful resources. They initiated diplomatic pressure against Japan. A suddenly appearing portal to an unknown realm may be nothing more than a tool for the great nations to overthrow the international order. But for our characters, this is a priceless opportunity to expand their education, friendships, and eventually their worldview.
