Swinging London, 1969. Ray Purbbs, aided by Alex, Jill, and Hugo, is the editor-in-chief of the underground (counterculture) journal Mouth, which he publishes from his Notting Hill Gate apartment. Ray is passionate about protest, absurdly thrilled about every hip movement, and sure he is (or might be) a significant role in the conflict between the Establishment and the alternative society. Alex embodies coolness, a man so laid-back that he appears to exist outside of reality, despite coming from a privileged background and being more interested in golf than improving society. Jill enjoys the newfound freedoms offered to her gender and professes to support free love, despite the fact that her 'lover' Ray has been devoid of her sexual interest for quite some time. Hugo's obfuscation is extraordinary, bordering on genius. The group, led by Ray, jumps on every fad and fails to make even the slightest difference in anything they accomplish. Even being hippies is difficult for the group.
