American cartoonist Jhonen Vasquez is responsible for the Invader Zim TV series. On March 30, 2001, the first episode of the show aired on Nickelodeon. Zim, an alien from the planet Irk, is the protagonist of this series. He is out to conquer and destroy Earth. His plans to conquer Earth and wipe out humanity are constantly foiled by a mixture of his own incompetence, GIR, his faulty robot servant, and a young paranormal investigator named Dib, who is one of the few individuals paying attention to know Zim's true identity. After a successful first season, Invader Zim saw its viewership fall as it became less appealing to its target audience of preteens. At least 23 episodes and a planned television movie series finale were left incomplete when Nickelodeon cancelled the show before the second season was done airing. There was a pilot episode, 46 aired episodes, and roughly 17 more in the can at the time of cancellation; all told, the show has a pilot, 46 aired episodes, and a cult following. As of the 19th of August,2006, all 46 episodes had been shown on television. Each of the 19 episodes is roughly twelve minutes long, and it consists of two stories. The season contains eight episodes that are each twice as long. Except for the pilot, which Jordan Reichek directed, Steve Ressel oversaw the production of every episode.
