Jamaica Inn
After the passing of her mother in 1820, the novel follows the journey of a young woman named Mary who is forced to live with her Aunt Patience. The setting of the story is the daunting backdrop of the windswept moors in Cornwall. When Mary visits her aunt at the remote Jamaica Inn, she finds that her aunt is a shadow of the carefree woman she remembers from her childhood. Instead, she finds a drudge who is completely under the spell of her controlling husband, Joss. It is quickly revealed that this is really a front for the fact that Joss is the head of a smuggling ring and that Jamaica Inn is the center of his 'free' commerce. The rooms at the inn are kept locked and are not available for visitors to use.
