Judge Judy is an American reality court show featuring retired Manhattan Family Court Judge Judith Sheindlin presiding over arbitrations. In a courtroom-like setting, Sheindlin arbitrates actual small claims cases. Under Sheindlin, all parties must sign contracts that say they agree to arbitration. The series is distributed in first-run syndication by CBS Television Distribution. According to reports, Judge Judy, which debuted on September16,1996, reinvigorated the court show genre. Only two other arbitration-based reality court series, The People's Court and Jones and Jury, existed prior to it. Sheindlin is credited for introducing the "tough" adjudicating style into the judicial genre, which has inspired numerous imitations. Sheindlin's tenure as a television arbitrator is the longest, surpassing that of The People's Court and Divorce Court, two court shows with more seasons than Judge Judy. By2011, Judge Judy had been nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards for fourteen consecutive years, although she had never won. On June14,2013, Judge Judy was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program for the fifteenth time.
