Lassie is an American television series about Lassie, a female Rough Collie dog, and her human and animal pals. From September 12, 1954, through March 24, 1973, the show was hosted by producer Robert Maxwell and animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax. The sitcom aired on CBS for seventeen seasons before moving to first-run syndication for its last two seasons, making it one of television's longest-running shows. In 1965, the show went from black and white to color. Lassie's exploits in a tiny farming town are chronicled throughout the first ten seasons of the show. Until the fourth season, when seven-year-old Timmy Martin and his adoptive parents take over, fictional eleven-year-old Jeff Miller, his mother, and grandfather are Lassie's first human friends. When Lassie's agricultural escapades come to an end in the eleventh season, she seeks new adventures in the wilderness with a succession of US Forest Service Rangers. After a year of traveling without human leads, Lassie settles down for her final two syndicated seasons at a children's home. Lassie was well-received by critics when it initially aired, and in its first two years, it earned two Emmy Awards. Jan Clayton and June Lockhart have received Emmy nominations. Books, a Halloween costume, apparel, toys, and other goods were made as part of the show's merchandise. The show's long-time sponsor, Campbell's Soup, offered two premiums and gave thousands to fans. In August1963, a multi-part episode was turned into the feature picture Lassie's Great Adventure. Jon Provost, who played Steve McCullough in the television series The New Lassie, made a comeback in 1989. DVDs have been made available for a few episodes.
