Love & War is a CBS comedy that ran from September 21, 1992, to February 1, 1995. The series, which was created by Diane English, starred Susan Dey as Wally Porter, a Chicago restaurateur, and Jay Thomas as Jack Stein, a sportswriter with whom she had an on-again, off-again relationship. The show was retooled after the first season, and Dey was sacked by the producers, who claimed that she and Thomas had "no chemistry" together. Dana Palladino, who bought Porter's restaurant and became Jack's love interest, was replaced by Annie Potts. In the first season, there were also times when Jack or Wally would break the fourth wall and speak directly to the camera, usually to describe an emotional problem. Later seasons did away with this mechanic. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David made a cameo appearance in one episode as themselves as a "thank you" to creator Diane English for permitting a quick scene on Murphy Brown in an episode of Seinfeld in which Kramer plays the titular character's secretary. Suzie Plakson, Joanna Gleason, Joel Murray, Charles Robinson, and Michael Nouri were among the show's supporting cast members. John Hancock, who previously had a recurring role as a judge on L.A. Law alongside Susan Dey, played bartender Ike throughout the first half of season one until his death in late 1992 from a heart attack. His death was later incorporated into the script, and actor Charlie Robinson took his place.
