Minder is a British comedy-drama series set in the criminal underbelly of London. It was manufactured by Euston Films, a subsidiary of Thames Television, and broadcast on ITV after being originally produced by Verity Lambert. The show starred Dennis Waterman as Terry McCann, an honest and likeable bodyguard, and George Cole as Arthur Daley, a socially ambitious but highly unethical importer-exporter, wholesaler, used-car salesman, and anything else from which money might be gained whether inside or without the law. The show is credited with popularizing the term "minder," which refers to a personal bodyguard, in the United Kingdom and Australia. The players frequently drank at the Winchester Club, a local members-only establishment where owner and bartender Dave functioned as a message machine for Arthur and turned a blind eye to his unscrupulous dealings, often against his choice. The series was remarkable for featuring a number of well-known British actors, as well as numerous up-and-coming stars before they made it big; at its peak, it was one of ITV's most popular shows. Minder was renewed for a new season in2009, with none of the original cast returning. Archie, Arthur's nephew, played by Shane Richie, was the subject of the new show. On February4,2009, the series premiered. Following the first series' tepid reception, it was confirmed in 2010 that no more episodes would be produced.
