The misadventures of Chad, his little brother Jay, and his best friend Chris as they grow up are told in this book. The boys live in the small town of Holford, where they walk around the strange and desolate landscape while they wait out their last few years of childhood. Along the way, viewers meet Chad's parents, Wayne and Rose, who are very traditional. They also meet Chris's single mother, Joanie, and her terrible boyfriend, Terry. They also meet Sharla, who is Chad's true love. The series deals with the dangers of growing up, like puberty, first loves, and being left out of a group. It also looks at that scary time between childhood and adulthood when young people's personalities are still forming and changing.
