Porridge
British television station BBC1 aired the situation comedy series Porridge between the years 1974 and 1977. The show ran for a total of three series, two Christmas specials, and a feature film of the same name. Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale play the roles of two inmates at the fictitious HMP Slade in Cumberland. The screenplay for the film was co-written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. The act of serving a prison sentence in the United Kingdom is referred to as "doing porridge" in British slang. Porridge was formerly served as the standard breakfast fare in UK prisons. The series was continued with a sequel in 1978 titled "Going Straight," which revealed that Fletcher would not be returning to jail at any point in the foreseeable future. According to the results of a poll conducted by the BBC in 2004, Porridge is the seventh best British sitcom of all time.
