Joe Murray is the creator of the American animated television series Rocko's Modern Life. The show aired on Nickelodeon for four seasons between 1993 and 1996. Rocko's Modern Life centers on the strange, comedic exploits of an Australian-immigrant, anthropomorphic wallaby named Rocko and his new life in O-Town. The show highlights both his American life and the lives of his pals, including the gluttonous steer Heffer, the neurotic tortoise Filburt, and Rocko's loyal dog Spunky. Includes double entendres, innuendos, and sarcastic societal commentary. In the late 1980s, Joe Murray created the title character for an unpublished comic book series before hesitantly pitching the project to Nickelodeon, who were seeking edgier cartoonists for their new Nicktoons block. The network provided its employees a great deal of creative flexibility, with authors able to write for both children and adults. Style-wise, the show's animation incorporates crooked architecture. In addition, Murray chose a number of up-and-coming voice performers, such as Tom Kenny and Carlos Alazraqui, who have since achieved widespread fame. The series is the fourth Nicktoon to debut. In an interview, Kenny characterized the show's significance, stating, "Rocko's Modern Life was just one of those shows that gave a lot of people their first break in the business."
