1964-65. Singapore is at a fork in the road. As the British withdraw, political and racial tensions are at an all-time high, and a new nation is poised to emerge. The lights on Bugis Street have never been brighter: street kiosks blare out illegal copies of Motown tunes; the Rolling Stones are in town, along with tourists and American sailors returning from Vietnam. On their way to their own war in Borneo, they join British and Australian soldiers who are checking out the prostitutes and gambling dens. This is the city where Sam Callaghan, Patricia Cheng, Conrad Harrison of the CIA, and the Cheng Detective Agency's clients live. The agency's cases vary from the mundane (divorced spouses and small-time criminals) to events having global ramifications and complexity. Sam's military ties are helpful, but they begin to lure him back into a dark world that he would rather leave behind.
