An alien spacecraft crashed-landed in Emery's little town when she was six years old. It didn't matter whether they came in peace or with more sinister intentions: a furious struggle began as humans sought for dominance over their new adversaries, an alien species known as the Atrians. During the fighting, Roman, a 6-year-old Atrian kid, found his way to a shed behind Emery's house, where she temporarily shielded him from harm by offering him food, comfort, and company. The Atrians have adjusted to life on Earth after ten years, but they are detained in a tightly guarded camp known as the Sector to keep them distinct from humans. For the first time, a group of Atrian teenagers will enroll in a human high school in the suburbs, with the purpose of evaluating the viability of human/alien integration. Emery and Roman re-discover each other in a school and culture that despises the Atrians. While the world around them is filled with hate and prejudice, their link grows stronger and more perilous.
