The Cosby Show is an American situation comedy television series starring Bill Cosby that ran on NBC for eight seasons from September 20, 1984 to April 20, 1992. The show focuses on the Huxtables, an African-American upper-middle-class family residing in Brooklyn, New York. The program, according to TV Guide, "was television's biggest hit of the 1980s and nearly single-handedly restored the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes." The show was first presented to ABC, which rejected it. According to Entertainment Weekly, The Cosby Show paved the way for a wider variety of series about people of African origin, such as In Living Color and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The Cosby Show was inspired by Cosby's stand-up comedy routines, which were based on his family life. Later, other comedies, including Home Improvement and Everybody Loves Raymond, would adopt this format. The series generated the spin-off A Different World, which lasted from 1987 to 1993 for six seasons.
