The Dating Game is a game show that has been shown on ABC's television network since the 20th of December in 1965. It was the first of many series that Chuck Barris would produce and package during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. On July 6, 1973, ABC decided to stop airing the show, but it remained on air in syndication under the name The New Dating Game for another year. 1978–1980, 1986–1989, and 1996–1999 are the years that it was brought back to life. For a number of years, it was nearly always broadcast at the same time as another Barris creation called The Newlywed Game, which made its debut on ABC the year after it had originally aired. This show paved the way for a number of other shows that followed a similar format and had similar themes.
