This American sitcom features Donna Reed as Donna Stone, a middle-class housewife in the upper middle class. Her co-stars include Carl Betz, who plays her pediatrician husband, and Shelley Fabares and Paul Petersen, who play their teenage children, Mary and Jeff. Its original broadcast run on ABC lasted from September 24, 1958, through March 19, 1966. Petersen's younger sister Patty Petersen replaced Fabares as Trisha, Petersen's adopted daughter, in 1963. On January 31, 1963, Patty Petersen made her debut in the episode "A Way of Her Own." Darryl Richard became a near regular as Jeff's best friend Smitty, while Bob Crane and Ann McCrea made guest appearances as the Stones' friends the Kelseys in the last seasons. Esther Williams, playing a famous dress designer, baseball greats Don Drysdale and Willie Mays, playing themselves, teen heartthrob James Darren, playing a pop singer with the measles, canine superstar Lassie, playing herself, and young Jay North, playing Dennis the Menace, all made appearances on the show. Reed and her then-husband, producer Tony Owen, worked closely with the show's creator, William S. Roberts. Each episode dealt with a different standard family issue of the day, such as getting rid of an inept housekeeper, celebrating a colleague's retirement, or getting some alone time without the kids. Sometimes taboo topics like women's rights and press freedom were discussed.
