RJ Berger's Hard Times was an MTV comedy series developed by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith. RJ Berger, an unpopular sophomore at the fictional Pinkerton High School in Ohio with an abnormally enormous penis, is the show's central character. Miles Jenner, whose desire for fame causes him to battle with Berger, and goth girl Lily Miran, who has lusted after Berger for numerous years, are Berger's two greatest pals. Jenny Swanson, a cheerleader who is dating Max Owens, a popular athlete and bully, is Berger's love interest. The show is billed as a coming-of-age drama, and Katzenberg and Grahame-Smith have compared it to a cross between The Wonder Years and the film Superbad. The pilot episode aired on June6,2010, and the 12-episode first season ended on August23, 2010. The Hard Times of RJ Berger was renewed for a second season by MTV, which started on March24, 2011 and ended on May30,2011, although the show was terminated in August of that year.
