The majority of the characters are portrayed by three of the show's four writers, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, and Reece Shearsmith, who, along with Jeremy Dyson, founded the League of Gentlemen comedy team in 1995. The series initially ran from 1999 to 2002 for three seasons, followed by a 2005 feature. In December 2017, a three-part revival miniseries was televised to commemorate the group's 20th anniversary.
