Ryan Atwood, from a shattered home, is adopted by Sandy and Kirsten Cohen. Ryan and his socially awkward surrogate brother Seth are outsiders in Newport Beach. Ryan and Seth spend a lot of time negotiating their relationships with Marissa Cooper, Summer Roberts, and Taylor Townsend. Culture conflict between idealistic Cohen family and superficial, materialistic, closed-minded neighborhood. The series mixes postmodernism, melodrama, and comedy.
