The Penguins of Madagascar is an American CGI animated television series that airs on Nickelodeon. It stars nine characters from the DreamWorks Animation animated film Madagascar: the penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico; the lemurs King Julien, Maurice, and Mort; and the chimps Mason and Phil. Marlene the otter and Alice, a zookeeper, are new characters to the series. It is the first Nicktoon created in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation. On November 29, 2008, a pilot episode called "Gone in a Flash" premiered as part of "Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend," and The Penguins of Madagascar became a regular series on March 28, 2009. The series premiere received 6.1 million people, setting a new record for the most-watched debut. The Penguins of Madagascar does not take place at a specific moment in the franchise, despite occasional allusions to it. McGrath, who also co-created the film characters, has stated that the series takes set in the future "I just wanted them all back in the zoo, neither before or after the movie. It seems to be taking place in a parallel reality to me."
