Senkosha Productions created The Samurai in the 1960s. Its Japanese name is Onmitsu Kenshi. The series ran on TBS from 1962 through 1965 for ten 13-episode story cycles. In1964, Toei Company developed two black-and-white feature films and a stage production based on the TV series. Samurai was a hit despite a little budget. It was the first Japanese TV program screened in Australia, where it launched in 1964 and quickly became a cult favorite among young Australians. Despite being famous in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the Philippines, the series wasn't extensively shown elsewhere, therefore its fame is limited to those nations. It was followed in 1965 by The New Samurai, with a new main character, but it was discontinued after 39 episodes, compared to 128 for the original. In1973, a color TV series was developed for 26 new episodes as a failed remake and later a reboot. All of the TV shows were sponsored by Takeda.
