The State is a half-hour sketch comedy television show that aired on MTV in the United States from December 17, 1993 until July 1, 1995. The show used odd characters and circumstances to create sketches that appealed to the show's intended teenage demographic. The show was written, directed, and edited by 11 twenty-something comedians. For a brief time, the show's catchphrases became commonplace. Frequently, the group would dress up and address the audience to advertise fictitious contests or offer phony public service messages. The State's sketches, like Monty Python's, were occasionally linked in some way: a punchline or visual that closed one skit often served as a lead-in to the next. On July 14, 2009, the series was released on DVD after years of legal battles over the music to several of the episodes. A State film starring all of the original troupe members is in the works, but has yet to be released due to the 2007-2008 screenwriters strike.
