From 1965 to 1975, BBC1 broadcast the groundbreaking British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part. The show debuted as a pilot for Comedy Playhouse and ran for seven series until 1975. Six years later, ITV continued the comedy series under the title Till Death.... The BBC created a sequel to In Sickness and in Health from 1985 to 1992. Till Death Us Do Part, created by Johnny Speight, centered on the East End Garnett family, lead by patriarch Alf Garnett, a white working-class reactionary with racist and anti-socialist sentiments. Else, his patient and kind wife, was portrayed by Dandy Nichols, and Rita, their daughter, by Una Stubbs. Mike Rawlins, the intelligent but irresponsible spouse of Rita, is a socialist. Mitchell played Alf Garnett on stage and television until 1998, when his creator, Speight, passed away. In addition to the spin-off In Sickness and in Health, the film Till Death Us Do Part has been remade in other countries, including Brazil, Germany, and the United States. As was the policy during the late 1960s and early 1970s, it is believed that many episodes from the first three series no longer exist.
