The famous BBC adaptation of Tolstoy's epic love story set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins as Pierre Bezuhov (for which he received a BAFTA in1972), Morag Hood as Natasha Rostova, Alan Dobie as Andrei Bolkonsky, and David Swift as Napoleon, whose decision to invade Russia in 1812 has far-reaching ramifications for Pierre and the Rostov and Bolkonsky families. Producer David Conroy's objective for the twenty-part serial was to convert Tolstoy's finest novel's rich characterisation and incident to a television drama. Conroy's War And Peace, directed by John Davies and written by Jack Pulman, features excellent performances, award-winning design (BAFTA for Best Design in1972) and magnificent conflict sequences shot in former Yugoslavia.
