In the early days of World War II, a German U-boat is sunk in Hudson Bay, Canada, killing all on board. A small group of German soldiers, led by commanding officer Lieutenant Hirth, tries to cross the border into the United States, which has not yet entered the war and is therefore considered to be legally neutral. A daring group of men, including Johnnie, a French-Canadian fur trapper, Peter, the leader of a Hutterite farming community, Philip, and a soldier named Andy Brock, come upon the German soldiers on their journey across France and Canada.
