At Christmastime, Joseph Harris, a famous but disturbed playwright, arrives in a small Michigan town to stage his latest work. A young, aspiring writer greets the cynical New Yorker, challenging his literary idol to become the icon he'd hoped for. Harris has no desire to be a hero to the young man, nor does he want to be a part of Michigan's small-town theater. Harris plans to return to New York on the next train out as soon as he arrives.
