In late 1988, in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, military recruits Petrovsky, Ryaba, Chugun, Stas, Pinochet, Lyutev, and Vorobyev are flogged into shape by their cruel leader, Warrant Officer Dygalo, before being deployed to the front lines. After several one-on-one encounters with the local whore, Snow White, and a cautionary lecture on Afghanistan's history, geography, and culture (which most of the men sleep through), the trainees are sent to battle-first to the Bagram air base, then to Khost province to secure supply lines and supply routes. Not even the awful devastation they face, or the unceasing flow of slaughter that leaves thousands of Soviet victims behind.
