Al Roberts, a New York nightclub pianist, decides to hitchhike to Hollywood to see his girlfriend Sue. Charles, the gambler with whom he is riding, passes away unexpectedly. Al assumes the man's identity out of fear that the police will not believe him. In a gas station, he gives Vera, a woman who knew Charles, a lift and blackmails Al, with tragic results.
