Whale Rider
It is said that the Whangara people arrived in New Zealand over a thousand years ago when their canoe capsized and they averted death by riding a whale to shore. Whangara leaders were then regarded Paikea's direct offspring, always male first-borns. 11-year-old Pai believes she will be the next chief in her patriarchal New Zealand tribe. But her grandfather Koro must select a male leader. For her destiny, Pai must overcome Koro and a thousand years of tradition.
