Agony
From 1979 to 1981, ITV showed the British sitcom Agony. In it, Maureen Lipman played a successful advice columnist whose own life and marriage are a mess. Len Richmond, Anna Raeburn, Stan Hey, and Andrew Nickolds wrote it. It was made by LWT for the ITV network. Even though it was a comedy, Agony sometimes talked about things that were considered taboo at the time, like drug use, racism, abortion, interracial relationships, and swinging. It was also the first British sitcom to show a gay couple as not campy, smart, and happy. It also made fun of the government, the rich, and religion, and some of the stories were dark and dramatic.
