Brass

A Granada Television production, Brass is a British comedy-drama series that aired on ITV and eventually Channel 4. Brass, a comedy set in a fictional Lancashire mining town in the 1930s, parodied 1970s working-class period dramas and Americansupersoaps like Dallas and Dynasty. Brass was a satire of both. For ITV comedies at the time, there was no laugh track and the humour was purposefully kept extremely dry, employing intricate wordplay and subtle criticism on popular culture to keep the jokes fresh. "Effrontery" and "money" are both slang terms for "brass" in northern English. Even more gleefully mimicked the Granada TV adaptation of Dickens' Hard Times, which also starred Timothy West. The Hardacres, a wealthy family, and the Fairchilds, a poor working-class family, resided in a modest terraced house rented from the Hardacre empire in the series produced by John Stevenson and Julian Roach. They were led by the cruel, self-made businessman Bradley, who advocated Thatcherite rhetoric while conceiving of numerous crazy ideas to make his enterprises more efficient so that he could fire his workers, Lady Patience, and their drunken aristocratic husband, Lord Percy. Agnes, the stern "Red" Fairchild, and her doltish, forelock-tugging husband George were the Fairchild family's leaders, spreading socialist discourse around the Hardacre mine, mill, and weapons factory. Agnes was Bradley Hardacre's mistress in a surprising twist.
