Pete Young takes a risk for the first time in his life when he applies for and obtains his dream job as a batboy for the New York Empires. This may be the only risk he has ever taken. The issue is that his single mother Lynne has no idea what he is doing. His wayward older sister, Betsy, has always been in the doghouse, while he has been the golden boy up until now. Pete attends a strict Catholic high school with his best friend Mike, who seeks to profit from Pete's new position in life. Pete becomes a member of a new family at work, which includes Conrad Dean, the team's captain and top third baseman and one of the boy's greatest heroes, who assumes the position of older brother. Lou Russo, Pete's employer, is a rough but fair equipment manager who becomes a much-needed father figure; Carlos Tavares, a rookie who believes Pete is his good luck charm; and Jose Marquez, the Empires' territorial head batboy, are also in the clubhouse. Pete is ecstatic to be a member of his favorite team, but he must still combine life at home with life in the major leagues while facing moral challenges and curve balls.
