Debbie Watson plays the title part in the American comedy Tammy, which stars the actress in the main role. A total of 26 color episodes of half an hour each were produced by Universal City Studios and broadcast on ABC between September 17, 1965 and March 11, 1966. Tammy was mostly inspired by the three films of the same name, Tammy and the Bachelor, Tammy Tell Me True, and Tammy and the Doctor, all of which starred Sandra Dee. Debbie Reynolds starred in the first two of these films. The novels written by Cid Ricketts Sumner served as the basis for the films' adaptations. Other television comedies with a rural setting, such as The Beverly Hillbillies, served as a source of inspiration for the show as well. In particular, there are parallels to be seen between the character of Cletus Tarleton from Tammy and Jethro Bodine from The Beverly Hillbillies.
