Target

Target was a police drama series that aired on BBC1 from 1977 to 1978 under that name. It took place in Southampton, which at the time housed the 13th Regional Crime Squad. Graham Williams, the show's original producer, came up with the idea for the series and gave it the working title of Hackett. However, Williams was then asked to switch duties with Philip Hinchcliffe, the outgoing producer of Doctor Who, who gave the show its current name, Target. Patrick Mower played the role of Det. Supt. Steve Hackett, Brendan Price played the role of Det. Sgt. Frank Bonney, Vivien Heilbron played the role of Det. Sgt. Louise Colbert, and Philip Madoc played the role of Det. Chief Supt. Tate. Over the course of two series, there were a total of seventeen episodes made. The show was the BBC's attempt to compete with ITV's critically acclaimed series The Sweeney. However, Hackett's personal car is an American car similar to a Dodge Charger and is seen in a number of episodes. The cars that were utilized in the show were all Fords, namely Cortinas and Granadas. When compared to The Sweeney, this series has a noticeable dearth of comedic moments, and at the time it was shown, it was reported that the series would be more violent than The Sweeney; nevertheless, when one watches this series now, it is difficult to identify the difference between the two. The second season had a more subdued tone. In addition, because Patrick Mower is such a powerful actor, he seems to completely eclipse the rest of the supporting cast, which is something that did not happen in Sweeney. The music for the theme was composed by Dudley Simpson. The duration of each program was around half an hour. The possibility of a third season came up, with Robert Banks Stewart taking over as the show's producer. He sat in the producer's chair for two weeks, during which time he devised a strategy to replace the supporting cast, tone down the amount of violence, and move the show in a direction that was further off from The Sweeney. On the other hand, he was later told by the head of drama that the series was going to be canceled, and he was tasked with coming up with a new criminal series to take its place. He conceived of the private eye drama known as Shoestring.
