Monte Walsh is a grizzled old cowboy living in the Wild West at the time when its glory days are coming to a close. As the use of cowboys becomes increasingly obsolete due to the proliferation of barbed wire and railways, Monte and his buddies are left with a decreasing number of options. They have access to new employment prospects, but the unrestricted freedom of the vast prairie is what they really crave. At some point, it will be necessary for all of them to bid farewell to the lives they had known and attempt to make a fresh start.
