Debbie Reynolds starred in the first two of these films. The novels written by Cid Ricketts Sumner served as the basis for the films' adaptations. Other television comedies with a rural setting, such as The Beverly Hillbillies, served as a source of inspiration for the show as well. In particular, there are parallels to be seen between the character of Cletus Tarleton from Tammy and Jethro Bodine from The Beverly Hillbillies.
